Everything to know about every canceled GTA 5 single-player expansion
Many fans hoped GTA 5 would get single-player expansions, though it never happened. That doesn’t mean there aren’t canceled expansions though.
Nowadays, almost every AAA game eventually gets a DLC. This could be in the form of a large-scale expansion that adds hours’ worth of content for players to enjoy or something minor like new weapons, skins, or music. However, even though GTA 5 is one of the most popular single-player games of all time, it has no expansions.
GTA Online gets various consistent updates, but that’s separate from the single-player experience. The base game hasn’t change at all since it came out all those years ago so fans weren’t able to see more of their favorite characters.
However, what many players don’t know is that GTA 5 was supposed to get multiple single-player expansions. As a matter of fact, the large leak at Rockstar Games in 2024 revealed the game was supposed to get eight expansions though they were all canceled. That doesn’t mean we don’t have information on it.
Why doesn’t GTA 5 have any DLC?
As mentioned above, almost every large-scale AAA game has at least one DLC or expansion, though GTA 5 is an exception. We know Rockstar isn’t against DLC, as shown by games like GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption, both of which had expansions. However, Red Dead Redemption 2 didn’t have any DLC either.
Now, in Red Dead Redemption 2’s case, it makes sense that adding any DLC would be difficult. After all, the developers can’t touch the story much since it chronologically takes place before the first Red Dead Redemption. Additionally, Arthur Morgan’s story reaches its definitive conclusion at the end of the game, so dragging it on would feel like a deliberate cash grab.
However, the same isn’t true for GTA 5 as Rockstar had planned DLC for the game. While some were supposed to take place simultaneously with the main game, some seemed to take place before the main game.
It’s safe to assume that GTA 5 doesn’t have any large expansion because of two reasons. The first is that GTA 5’s story ends with the player getting the choice to potentially kill Trevor or Michael. Adding a DLC that takes place after the game would be tricky since different players went for different choices. The second reason is that the DLC that was greenlit eventually went on to be the blueprint for GTA Online expansions and heists. After all, GTA Online makes more money for Rockstar, and most of the main team is likely hard at work on GTA 6.
Every canceled GTA 5 DLC
As mentioned above, GTA 5 has eight canceled expansions that fans know at least a little bit about. While there were likely more, they either don’t have any information on them or were made useless thanks to current-gen upgrades.
1. Manhunt
The first DLC planned for GTA 5’s single-player mode was called Manhunt. Those who have been following Rockstar Games will likely remember that Manhunt was a stealth, horror-survival videogame duology developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games in 2003. The game also got a sequel in 2007 called Manhunt 2.
It’s anybody’s guess what the single-player expansion was supposed to get. The Manhunt games weren’t as popular as the GTA series, and half of the reason is that the overall gameplay was significantly different from the third-person open-world GTA 5. The Manhunt DLC may have potentially added a new stealth game mode in GTA 5 alongside a small story.
2. Agent Trevor
The second canceled GTA 5 single-player expansion is called Agent Trevor. There were murmurs of a James Bond-style Trevor DLC and this seems to be it. As the name suggests, the DLC was supposed to have Trevor work with various NPCs and likely the government to thwart the plans of various groups that would threaten the peace of San Andreas.
If the plot of this DLC sounds familiar then that’s because it’s supposed to be. The original plans of the Agent Trevor DLC were eventually used to make GTA Online’s Doomsday Heist, though fans can’t help but wonder how things would have gone if Trevor had been involved. After all, the mined data revealed multiple new NPCs were supposed to be introduced in it.
3. Assassination
In the base game, Lester gives the player various missions to complete. Well, it seems Rockstar Games understood the assignment because the Assassination content pack was supposed to be a DLC specifically for Franklin. GTA gad even teased that the upcoming content for the game way back in 2014 included new assassination missions for story mode. However, it never ended up happening.
Unfortunately, the assassination DLC never came through because it was supposed to add a total of 12 assassination side missions to the game. These included skydiving missions to murdering someone in a cable car.
4. Liberty City
Los Santos may be an excellent place where multiple players spend countless hours. However, Liberty City holds a special place in the hearts of old GTA players. Because of this, Rockstar Games was planning a map expansion that would introduce Liberty City to GTA 5 and GTA Online.
The studio apparently worked on it since as far back as 2015. However, the plans ended up getting scrapped for some reason. Now, fans are hopeful that Liberty City will be explorable in the upcoming GTA 6.
5. Relationship
The relationship content pack is the most unknown of them all. While most other DLCs and expansions had some data left behind, this one didn’t. This lack of data suggests Rockstar hadn’t started on the DLC at all.
6. Flight School Pack
While Franklin was supposed to get the assassination content pack, it’s very likely that Trevor would have gotten the flight school content drop. Rockstar had teased that the story mode would get new flight school missions in a DLC pack named spflightschool that no longer exists in the game’s files suggesting it was scrapped.
7. Prologue
The prologue of GTA 5 had players rob a bank in North Yankton, kicking off the excellent story of the game. However, players weren’t able to return there for longer than a couple of minutes for a single-story mission. Well, it seems Rockstar realized the potential of it which is why there was supposed to be a DLC that would reintroduce North Yankton to the game.
Unfortunately, the DLC was scrapped and the idea was eventually used in GTA Online’s North Yankton expansion. However, it’s apparent the DLC is incomplete as shown by how players can only visit the graveyard and nothing more.
8. Norman
The Norman expansion, also known as the Zombie Apocalypse episode, was supposed to be set in an alternate apocalypse universe similar to Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare DLC. While Agent Trevor was supposed to feature Trevor, this episode would feature Michael and his children, Jimmy and Tracey.
The episode was supposed to have 18 story missions. However, the entire idea was scrapped and the Norman episode will now likely never see the light of day.
